Alternative Gifts

Don’t know what to buy someone for Christmas? Looking for something different? As the name suggests, Alternative Gifts are an alternative to traditional gifts, where you donate to a charity in someone else’s honor, as your gift to them. The Missions Committee has selected three charities for this year’s Alternative Gifts: Highland Valley Elder Services Meals on Wheels, Autism Housing Pathways, and UMCOR’s International Disaster Response and Recovery Response. If you would like to give an Alternative Gift, you may donate online on the church website (select the button for your preferred charity), send a check to WUMC indicating which organization(s) you want to give to, or place a check or cash in an envelope at church. There will also be letters in the Great Hall that describe the charity that can be taken and given to your loved one. We will be collecting donations through Sunday, December 28th.

Fall Fair Success

Another Fall Fair has come and gone, and this year, we raised $8,275.35! That number breaks down as follows:

Country Store: $2,145.65 | Country Store IOU’s: approx. $37.00 | Grandma’s Treasures: $735.50 | Jim Harvey: $160.00 | Kitchen: $877.20 | Silent Auction: $3,123.50 | Silent Auction, pending: $53.00 | Wesley Boutique: $418.50 | Wooden Items: $135.00 | Vendors: $590.00

Since running the youth confirmation class last year, I’ve been thinking about how we promise the church “our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service,” and how people fulfill this promise in abundance during fair season. Thank you to everyone who served as a volunteer, gifted their own possessions to sell, and was present on the day of the fair to shop and partake in the joy of community!

Special thanks go to the members of this year’s Fall Fair Committee, particularly Ann Dorr (Wesley Boutique), Deb Henson (Silent Auction), Beth James (Vendors), Celeste Lawler (Country Store), Becky Miller (Kitchen), Pat O’Hara (Kitchen), Deanna Pearlstein (Grandma’s Treasures), Sarah Serwa (Wooden Items), and Dana Tarr (Advertising).

WUMC Book Club

Please join the Wesley Book Club on January 19th, 2026 at 9:30am to discuss Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

“Who has not dreamed of life on an exotic isle, far away from civilization? Here is the novel which has inspired countless imitations by lesser writers, none of which equal the power and originality of Defoe’s famous book. Robinson Crusoe, set ashore on an island after a terrible storm at sea, is forced to make do with only a knife, some tobacco, and a pipe. He learns how to build a canoe, make bread, and endure endless solitude. That is, until, twenty-four years later, when he confronts another human being. First published in 1719, Robinson Crusoe has been praised by such writers as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest novels in the English language.” (Goodreads.com).

Contact Gerry Harvey for the Zoom link. The Wesley Book Club reads a wide range of titles and meets monthly to discuss what we have read. Join us for one meeting or come regularly. If you have a favorite book, share it with us!

Craig’s Doors

We continue to collect supplies for the local homeless population. The most needed items are: adult winter clothing, shoes, and gear (new or gently used); adult-sized socks and underwear (new); adult-sized sleeping bags (new or gently used); tarps; hand and toe warmers (new); toiletries (new), and feminine hygiene products (new). Donations can be placed in the bin in the church entrance. Thanks!

Not Bread Alone

Each Saturday, Wesley volunteers help at CHD’s Not Bread Alone, Amherst’s soup kitchen. Our tasks are to pick up donated food from Whole Foods (some weeks), make fruit salad, make sandwiches (some weeks), and sort and display donated produce. It is a short time commitment (typically 9–10:30am), but our consistent help is always greatly appreciated. You can volunteer as little or often as you would like. If interested, please email Ruth Harms to be added to the monthly emails with the volunteer sign up.

Healing Prayer Group

Healing Prayer continues to be offered by the Healing Prayer Ministry. We meet each Thursday, but we pray all week long. If you have a prayer request of any kind at all, please contact Nancy or Richmond with your request and we will pray with you and for you. We promise you a 100% confidentiality and full respect and to be sensitive to your circumstances.
