Celebrating 20 Years in Hadley, MA

Wesley United Methodist Church building in Hadley, MA

TWENTY YEARS OF OPEN DOORS

150 Years of Faith
20 Years in Our Hadley Home

This October we give thanks for twenty years in this place — and commit it to the next twenty years of justice and peace.

Wesley UMC has been a community of faith for more than 150 years. Twenty years ago, in 2006, we moved into our home here in Hadley — and ever since, this building has been more than a sanctuary. Through music, hospitality, and partnership with our neighbors, it has been a gift to the whole community. This fall we don’t mark the age of our church; we celebrate twenty years in this place and all that God has done here.

We received this building twenty years ago. For twenty years it has served our neighborhood. We now commit it — for the next twenty years and beyond — to the work of justice and peace.

What’s Happening

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2026 · 3:00 PM

The Anniversary Concert

Music has always been at the heart of Wesley. Our chancel choir, bell choir, and soloists will be joined by the community groups who rehearse and perform in our building all year — a celebration open to everyone, with a reception to follow. The program includes a reprise of the piece Horace Clarence Boyer composed for this building’s dedication in 2006. And if our mortgage is paid off in time, the afternoon will include a mortgage-burning ceremony — the building fully ours, debt-free, for the first time.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2026 · 10:00 AM

Celebration Sunday

Our culminating worship service, with a custom liturgy honoring our history, our mission, and our identity as a reconciling congregation. Former pastors and church leaders who have shaped Wesley over the years will take part.

SUNDAYS IN OCTOBER · 10:00 AM

Sundays in October

Each Sunday in October, our worship marks the anniversary together:

  • October 4 — Building on Our Past
  • October 11 — Celebrating Our Current Missions
  • October 18 — Providing for Our Future Ministries

Share Your Memory

We are compiling a booklet of devotional reflections written by our members — those who were present at the move, and those who have joined our family since. We would be blessed if you would contribute a short reflection (about 250–300 words) on the theme “Growing Where We Are Planted”: a memory of the move, or how our church family keeps growing and reaching out in Hadley and the world. Selected reflections will be gathered into a devotional booklet, and some will be read in worship during our celebration.

Please submit by Sunday, August 23.

A Simple Guide for Writing Your Reflection

A church anniversary is a time to celebrate God’s faithfulness, honor those who came before us, and look with hope toward the future. If it helps, you might shape your reflection around these five simple parts:

  • A Title — a warm, thematic title (for example: “An Altar of Remembrance,” “Built on the Rock,” or “Our Story of Grace”).
  • A Scripture — a verse that speaks to you, perhaps on remembrance, foundation, service, or God’s enduring love. Examples: Psalm 91:14; 1 Samuel 7:12 (“…he called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Hitherto the Lord has helped us’”); Ephesians 3:20–21; 1 Corinthians 13:13.
  • A Reflection (3–5 short paragraphs) — acknowledge the milestone, share a brief real-life anecdote, then connect it to your chosen scripture — remembering that our strength is not in a building, but in God’s unfailing grace.
  • A Takeaway — a thought, prayer, or gentle challenge for the reader. For example: How can we build on the foundation of those who went before us?
  • A Prayer — a short, heartfelt prayer thanking God for our church family and asking for guidance in the years to come.
